SUMMARY:2012 Project Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Women make up more than half the population yet hold only 17% of the U.S. Congressional seats\, less than a quarter of state legislative seats and only six governorships. Of those\, women of color constitute only 4.5% of the total members of Congress and 3.5% of state legislators. Even fewer women from the fields of science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics\, STEM\, hold public office. This under-representation has a profound impact on policymaking. The 2012 Project at Rutgers\, a national\, non-partisan campaign to increase the number of women in Congress and state legislatures\, aims to change this. In collaboration with The Association for Women in Communications\, Triangle Coalition\, and the co-sponsors listed below\, The 2012 Project will hold a webinar to explain why it is essential for women\, including those from underrepresented fields such as STEM\, to throw their hats in the ring in 2012. This webinar will highlight the experiences and insights of two 2012 Project faculty members who will share what it takes to be a candidate\, the difference women make in government\, and why it is important for more women\, especially those with STEM backgrounds\, to run. Join The 2012 Project and Triangle Coalition for this thought-provoking\, empowering\, and resource-filled presentation. Register here. This event is co-sponsored by The Association for Women in Communications; American Medical Women’s Association; MANA – A National Latina Organization; National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum; National Coalition of 100 Black Women; Professional Women of Color Network; Rachel’s Network; Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education; Victory Fund; Women Impacting Public Policy; and Women’s Action for New Directions.

SUMMARY:Education 2012: What the Election Year Will Mean for Education Policy
DESCRIPTION: The 2012 election cycle is off and running\, with big implications for America's schools. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) awaits reauthorization. The Obama administration is implementing new regulations targeted at for-profit colleges. Standoffs between the GOP-controlled House and the Obama administration have yielded budget brinksmanship\, while domestic spending has been squeezed by massive deficits. President Obama\, following in the footsteps of the Bush administration\, has aggressively championed federal education initiatives like Race to the Top and the Investing in Innovation fund. Meanwhile\, the Republican primaries have been marked by candidates' rejection of an active federal role in education\, as several have pledged to "turn out the lights" at the U.S. Department of Education. What do the 2012 elections hold for education? What will happen this year when it comes to ESEA\, for-profit education and federal education spending? Join us at AEI for a conversation that will consider these issues against the backdrop of the new book "Carrots\, Sticks\, and the Bully Pulpit: Lessons from a Half-Century of Federal Efforts to Improve America's Schools\," edited by AEI's Frederick M. Hess and Andrew P. Kelly. Participants: PETER CUNNINGHAM\, U.S. Department of Education FREDERICK M. HESS\, AEI ALYSON KLEIN\, Education Week CELIA SIMS\, Office of Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) JOE WILLIAMS\, Democrats for Education Reform DAVID WINSTON\, The Winston Group This event will be livestreamed. SUMMARY:Beating Expectations: Increasing Achievement in Math and Science For All Students
DESCRIPTION:Science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workers drive our nation's competitiveness by generating new ideas\, new companies and new industries. Over the past 10 years\, STEM jobs grew three times as faster than non-STEM jobs. STEM workers are less likely to  be unemployed than their non-STEM counterparts. At the same time\, U.S. students are not choosing STEM education at the rate we need\, leaving the nation without a supply of trained workers.  By some estimates\, 30 percent of the current unemployment rate is due to unemployed workers not having the skills employers need. But there are solutions.  Come learn about one way to effectively address the STEM challenge. The panelists will: Highlight data showing the impressive gains that NMSI's Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program has brought to student achievement in math and science\, especially for students underrepresented in those subjects. Share personal experiences demonstrating the life-changing impact that a rigorous math and science education brings to students. Discuss effective partnerships between the public and private sectors that are ensuring that students are given the tools they need to succeed in these critical subjects. Identify gaps or barriers in federal and state policy that are hindering state and local governments' abilities to create an education infrastructure in math and science. Moderator: Gregg Fleisher\, National Director of NMSI's Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program Panelists: --Captain Brad Cooper\, Executive Directive\, Joining Forces\, The White House\, Office of the First Lady --Representative Spencer Bachus\, Congressman for Alabama's 6th District (invited) --Tommie Sue Anthony\, President of Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science --Stephanie Reyes\, former APTIP student\, current Harvard University freshman --Rudy Davis\, former APTIP student\, current Auburn University sophomore To be held at 430 Dirksen To attend this conversation\, bringing your insights and interest on the topic. SUMMARY:Highly Successful Schools or Programs for K-12 STEM Education: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:To address questions raised in Congress about what constitutes a successful STEM school\, the National Science Foundation has asked the National Research Council (NRC) to convene a committee of experts in the evaluation of schools and educational programs\, learning and teaching in STEM\, teacher professional development\, educational policy\, and diversity and equity in STEM. Under the leadership of the NRC’s Board on Science Education and Board on Testing and Assessment\, the committee will draw on existing research to prepare and hold a workshop that will: identify a range of goals for highly successful education in STEM K-12; explore the criteria for identifying success relative to those goals; and classify the strategies and educational practices that K-12 schools and districts use to achieve success in science\, technology\, engineering\, and/or mathematics (STEM-themed magnet schools\, schools within schools\, STEM specialty schools\, partnerships with business and community organizations\, etc.)\, and identify scalable best practices associated with those strategies and educational practices. The committee will approach this task mindful of the difficulty of identifying highly successful schools\, strategies or teaching practices in general\, and with the assumption that while education in the STEM disciplines may have some idiosyncratic elements\, schools that are highly successful in one or more of the STEM disciplines will exhibit many characteristics of any successful school. Under this grant\, which will support the initial planning work on the project\, the committee will plan the workshop\, develop a framework for the workshop that includes strategies/educational practices\, goals\, and criteria for successful education in the STEM disciplines to guide the presentations and discussions at the workshop. The workshop will shed light on why schools are successful and facilitate decisions about the replication of proven successful strategies and practices. Register here

SUMMARY:Carrots, Sticks, and the Bully Pulpit
DESCRIPTION:Sobering Lessons from a Half Century of Federal Efforts to Improve America's Schools Since the 1960s\, the federal government has become increasingly involved in K-12 education\, altering the federal-state-local division of labor. Yet\, while we often debate the merits of particular federal initiatives or whether policies "work\," we have spent far less time considering what a half century of federal involvement has taught us about which goals and policies Uncle Sam can effectively pursue\, and what we can learn from his missteps and successes. Over the past fifty years\, what have we learned about the nature of a smart\, sensible federal role in K-12 schooling? AEI resident scholar and director of education policy studies Frederick M. Hess and AEI research fellow Andrew P. Kelly have commissioned a dozen papers to examine concrete lessons learned from looking back on the past fifty years of federal involvement in K-12 schooling. At this AEI conference\, panelists will present their findings and explore implications for the federal role in K-12 school reform going forward. Please register for this event here.
