The Hofstra University Center for STEM Education Research (CSR), instituted in 1989, establishes new educational visions by promoting and supporting cutting-edge projects related to the improvement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teaching and learning. The Center leads the development of contemporary online and text-based instructional materials, and convenes research-based professional development programs tailored to the needs of PreK- 16 STEM students and faculty. The Center conducts educational research related to interconnected STEM learning, gender equity, modes of instruction, engineering design, and student and faculty learning and engagement. Center personnel are senior-level educators with extensive experience in development and administration of pedagogically driven educational programs including those that involve significant conceptual complexity.
Presently, the Center is conducting NSF projects focused on:
- Developing and researching the academic potential of a hybrid instructional model and a set of prototypical materials that integrate 3-D educational gaming and real-world physical modeling into middle school technology education programs, and comparing the efficacy of both modes of instruction;
- Development of online, media based high school curriculum that provides a bridge to community college programs in several technological domains, and researches the degree to which articulated HS/CC courses can (1) support student learning of important STEM concepts and workforce skills, (2) be a pathway through which interest in technical careers can be stimulated, and (3) serve as a means through which the pursuit of further STEM education in the three domains is inspired; and
- Researching the infusion of mathematics concepts into middle school science curriculum in order to transform the primarily descriptive instruction currently used into more inferential and analytical instruction.
